Quinn grabbed Tony’s arm and yanked him to a stop. “Checkpoint around the corner,” she said.

“I wish Sashelle would talk to me,” Tony said, rubbing his arm.

“She said her bandwidth is strained by talking to both of us.” Quinn was secretly pleased the caat had chosen her over Tony, but she tried not to show it. It was childish. But still satisfying to be the chosen one.

“Her bandwidth is strained?” Tony repeated.

Quinn smiled. “My words, not hers. She’s monitoring a lot of chatter. Or maybe she’s just being feline. Let’s go back a block. Is that better, Sashelle?”

You should probably find a place to hide until tomorrow, Sashelle said. They are deploying more soldiers. Every street I’ve checked is covered. Can you get inside any of these buildings?

“She says we need to hide,” Quinn said. She glanced across the narrow street at a lighted coffee shop. “Maybe we should grab a cup of coffee.”

“If they start shutting down businesses, we could get caught up in a sweep,” Tony said. “If that happens, they’ll do a closer check of our IDs. No guarantee they’ll stand up to the scrutiny.”

“What is our alternative?” Quinn asked. “Break into one of these buildings?”

“If we can get a few more blocks…” Tony swiped at his comtab in frustration. “If we could get to Sven’s building, he could help us.”

“Sven? Sven Harvard?” Quinn asked. “Why would he help us? I’m sure, unlike the rest of the locals, he’d recognize us immediately. He’d love to get an exclusive on turning us over to the Federation. Convicted traitors.” She shivered.

“Sven is one of us,” Tony said softly.

“Us?” Quinn asked.

“Krimson,” Tony whispered.

“No. Really? Then what are we waiting for?” Quinn turned in a circle looking for the caat. “Sashelle, we need to get to— What’s the address?”

Tony gave it to her. “That’s the direction we’ve been heading and she said we’re stuck, so why—”

“Great,” Quinn interrupted. “She’s going to meet us in that doorway.” She pointed at a dark opening in the next building. She hurried along the street and stepped into the deep entryway. On impulse, she checked the door, but it was locked.

“She said a few seconds ago that we’re surrounded,” Tony complained. “Why do you think she can help us now?”

You were trying to get out of town, Sashelle said as she appeared beside them. To the nasty smelling building. There is no way to leave the city at this time. They have it completely cordoned off.

Tony held up his device. “I know. What—”

Quinn held up a hand to stop him. She pulled out her own comtab. “Tony has a friend here,” she said, staring at the map. “Can you see this map?”

Sashelle went still as a statue, her eyes closed to slits. I see it. There is currently one checkpoint between here and there. I think we can elude them. Follow me.

She stood, stretched, and slunk into the street.

Tony raised his hands in confusion.

Quinn shook her head. “Don’t ask, just trust.”

They followed Sashelle into an alley that emerged in an empty lot between two high rises.
